“Free Press of Ukraine” – “You are taking a corpse in your house. You should be treated in Pavlivska” – it’s an understatement of what they said
It is a story of true humanity and a rare way of kindness, not temporary, not loud, but one that lasts for years and remains in the hearts forever.
In the village Stáre in Kyiv region the approach of summer heat was felt. Alina opened her eyes and saw the hot sun shined through the curtains. This meant that it was another day she would spend in the house walls.
Alina Didusenko had never known, what is a carefree childhood. She had never been on the beach, never skated on skis or skates or even danced at school parties: her heart can not withstand neither loads, nor heat, nor cold. Birth defect could be removed by surgery till 3 months of life. But then her mother ran away from the hospital, apparently, having more important business. 4 years later the woman was deprived of parental rights for drunkenness. As Alina had never seen her dad, she got into the Krasnokutskiy orphanage in Kharkiv region. And 2 years later – into the Institute of Amosov to cardiacs. It was the place, from which ran away a married couple, who wanted adopt the girl, fearing irreparable diagnosis: heart defect was inoperable.
“I couldn’t walk on far distance, it was hard to breath and my heart ached,” – this is how Alina describes her feelings back then. Although now it is much worse, she feels safer. There, at the Institute of Amosov, she met her mother, not that, who gave her birth, but the real one.
In 2007 Natalia Gordienko’s son had surgery and then lived in a ward with Alina. This is how Natalia stayed with the girl for a three days:
“She was always nervous, always crying. I hugged her. We talked a lot, “- said Natalia Evhenivna. She felt strong maternal instinct. How she could leave a desolate, seemingly abandoned by people and God, child? After talking with her husband, it was agreed: the child must be taken.
Natalia felt, how Alina had been living for all these years, a week later. In the orphanage they were told: “You are taking a corpse in your house. You should be treated in Pavlivska (a hospital for people with psychiatric diseases)” – it’s an understatement of what they said” – remembers Natalia. “I wanted to help her. If at least one child would grow not in an orphanage, at least one would feel family warmth, the child would raised adapted to this world. And dividing them into healthy and sick, those and that, is wrong”.
So six weeks later Alina moved into a new house. There are more than 2000 people in the village, so she already has friends. But the girl canbarely see them, because of heart disease. The majority of time she spends in her bed, or helps her mother – that is how she calls a guardian Natalia – to cook, or do something easy at home.
Alina has a whole set of diagnoses, all of them are complicated to understand: congenital heart defect, large atrial septum defect, great interventricular septum defect, tricuspid valve atresia, pulmonary hypertension, and that’s not all. But we can say it simply: the lungs compressing the child’s heart.
Now she has recommended an operation, but the complicated one: transplantation of the lungs and the heart. Natalia Gordienko have already met people with transplanted heart (the story of Andrew Dubyk), therefore she believes, it’s not the end. Clinic in America put Alina in five years list with the operation cost in more than a million dollars. Such amounts Gordienko heard only in Hollywood movies. Therefore, the proposal of Indian hospital in 155 thousand dollars seemed more real.
Mean while, the treatment continues. Of course, Alina lives on pills when she is lack of air, she submissively breathe an oxygen with plastic tubes. This is her cross. The family has their own one. Before the fall of the hryvnia treatment costed the 40 thousand per month. The amount you will agree, is impressive. Now it costs 100-120 thousand. The Ministry of Health doesn’t buy the needed drugs – it’s too expensive. I wonder where did a rural medical assistant get such amounts of money. The answer impressed me:
“We take deposits, loans, sorry for candor, but if someone dies from the disease – we take medicines that remained. Even a few caps make it already easier for us. We pledged our house and car. There is no way we could take another credit”.
You should agree, it’s not easy to find such brave people. To give a terminally ill abandoned child family warmth , pledge house and car, get loans and still believe that this complicated operation with such large amounts is able to be done. Perhaps it’s the truth, when people say, this world rests on the power of will, faith and goodness. Unfortunately, the family isn’t able to give more, it doesn’t depend on them anymore, whether they ever see Alina’s graduation, diploma or her own family. But it depends on everyone, who reads this article.
Here is an account, on which you can put at least some money to help with monthly treatment, which requires 100-120 thousand hryvnyas:
