For the first time in Ukraine a patient got implanted a mechanical heart. The operation was conducted at the Institute of heart by Todurov Borys Mykhailovych

Transplantologist Borys Todurov brought to life the only chance for the patient to extend waiting time for heart transplantation: http://hromadske.ua/posts/v-ukraini-vpershe-peresadyly-mekhanichne-sertse.

As you may know, Ukraine doesn’t conduct organ transplantation from a deceased donor. Even with “presumption of disagreement” there are people who agree to become donors after their death, but when it comes to the taking of organs, lungs and heart are buried with the body, because there is no single register of recipients (those who need an organ transplant ) in Ukraine, ie, “de jure” there is no people to transplant to. While, there are thousands of patients who are in need of transplantation of lungs, heart or both organs and who have to ask for it abroad. European clinics refuse Ukrainian patients in transplantation, because Ukraine is not a member of the “Eurotransplant”.

We recall, that May 14, 2016 in Lviv the LCCF of “Sister Dalila”, PHURDA organised the round table on “Transplantation in Ukraine: discussion of effective model of the transplant coordination system” with the direct participation of one of the key persons in transplantation in Ukraine – Borys Todurov.

The result of the Round Table was creation of resolution; creation of a working group for transplantation in the Lviv region for the effective implementation of the transplant coordination system in the Lviv region, the creation of a regional coordination center of transplantation, creation of necessary regulatory changes to legislation in this area; appeal to the Committee of Verkhovna Rada with a request to complete the Law of Ukraine “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine on health care and transplantation of organs and other anatomic human materials”; appeal to the Department of Health in Ukraine to work on:

– Establishment of a single state register of recipients;

– Implementation of transplant coordination system at the national level by creating a National Programme and the National Strategy of development of transplant coordination, considering the most effective models of modern world experience.

We hope, that the issue of organ transplants from cadaveric donor in Ukraine won’t be only a topic for discussion, but will include real steps for its implementation and realisation of the right to life for Ukraine patients who need transplants.
